Born in the west London suburb of Wembley, England, Maxine was a mere 16 years old when she began singing in her school band. Enjoying the spotlight so much, she began appearing in a local clubs and came to the attention of Pye Records, who signed her. Four singles were recorded, including “Don’t Push Me Baby” and 1971s’ “Love On Borrowed Time”.
Theater attracted Maxine in the early 70s and she obtained roles in the hottest musicals – Jesus Christ Superstar, Hair, Godspell – and the well-received London play Savages. In 1975, she teamed up with the songwriting production duo of J.Vincent Edwards and Pierre Tubbs. They proved the perfect pair to showcase her outstanding vocals. After she signed to United Artists and debuted with “Right Back Where We Started From”, Maxine found herself with a Top UK Hit. The song proved even more popular in the United States where it climbed to No. 2 on the 1976 pop charts.
Backed by an outstanding assortment of session musicians and continually partnered with songwriters who were able to best direct her voice, Maxine愀 debut LP, with 4 singles, including the title track, “Right Back Where We Started From”, reached Number 65 in the United States. The following year, she released, “Night Life” (produced by Denny Diante) which included a UK hit “Love Hit Me” and a cover of the Delfonic’s “Didn’t I Blow Your Mind This Time”.
In 1979, Maxine scored with another great song when “Lead Me On” weighed in at No. 5 on the charts.
In recent years, she has performed at many Jazz Festivals in the USA and in the islands including The Barbados Music Festival, the Curacao Music Festival and the St. Kitts Jazz Festival. Maxine also performed with Steve Reid’s Bamboo Forest and appears on their Dreamscapes CD released in 2001.
In 2003, she was the special guest of Nile Rodgers (Chic) at The Hollywood Bowl. In August 2003 Maxine headlined the Get Up & Dance US Arena Tour which featuring many top stars from the 70s. She also recorded a Live Jazz CD at the famous B.B. King’s Club at Universal Studios in Hollywood.
Maxine’s incredible jazz set includes “Get Here”, “Green Dolphin Street”, “Little Girl Blue”, “Song For My Father”, “Spring Can Really Hang You Up” and “Where Can I Go”. Maxine’s dynamic performances and her wonderfully powerful voice thrill audiences everywhere she goes.
